Getting Started with the Ecomusicology Bibliography:

  • Step 1: Becoming a Group Member
    1. Under “Groups” at http://www.zotero.org/, search “Ecomusicology.”
    2. Click “Ecomusicology” in the search results.
    3. Select “Join.”
  • Step 2: Syncing
Syncing transfers library items between your local computer and the Zotero servers, allowing you to work with your data from any computer with the Zotero extension. When you join the Ecomusicology Group and sync, that database becomes available to you in Zotero under “Group Libraries.” For more information about syncing, click here.

    1. Click Zotero at the bottom right corner of your browser.
    2. Click the green arrow on the right to “sync” with the Group Library (and your own library if you create one).
      • When the green arrow stops spinning, you should see “Ecomusicology” under the new heading “Group Libraries” to the left. Syncing regularly ensures that you have access to the most updated information.
      • NOTE: It’s typically better to sync after about 5pm because fewer people are clogging the server.

A Few Tips:

  • Regarding the Ecomusicology bibliography:
      • Editing:
        1. The Ecomusicology Bibliography is only as good as the community of users involved with it. We welcome your input.
        2. To suggest additions/removals and corrections, please email ams.esg@gmail.com. If you are interested in actively editing the bibliography, please email the same address with a request to become an administrator.
      • Searching:
        1. If your search pulls up lots of hits, you can sort by item type, title, author, etc. if need be.
        2. Many of the newspaper articles and websites have the full text entered as notes – if the text you search appears in the article, Zotero will pull up that item.
  • Regarding your personal Zotero library:
    • Consider using the Word plug-in for seamless Zotero integration.
    • Deleting: If you delete an item from a subfolder, it remains within “My Library,” but if you delete an item from “My Library,” it is completely erased.
    • Backing up: Highly recommended! See http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data
    • Searching: The search box checks all entered information, including title, author, notes, etc., but only in the selected library; to search the Ecomusicology bibliography, make sure you’ve selected that library.
    • Adding items: Realize that some sites give you extraneous or even garbled information; each time you add an item, be sure to check that you have all the necessary information (e.g. all author/editor names, complete title of part and whole work, start and end page numbers, etc. depending on type of item).
  • Common Problems:
      • Zotero doesn’t appear at the bottom right corner of my browser window.
        1. Select “Zotero” under “Tools” at the top of the browser page.
        2. Under Zotero’s Tools (the icon that looks like a gear), click Preferences.
        3. Under “General,” preferences for the Status Bar Icon are offered. The “none” option is probably highlighted – Check off one of the other two (“Zotero” or “Z”) and restart Firefox. Whichever you highlighted should then appear at the bottom right hand corner of your browser window.
